8 Most Common Reasons for Proposal Rejections

The most frequent reason that proposals are rejected by funders is that the proposal does not fit with the funder's goals. Thus, the most important aspect of preparation is to find out as much as you can about the organization you are applying to.

The second most common reason for rejection is that the writer did not customize the proposal for each organization. Do not blindly send out copies of the same proposal to multiple foundations. Adjust your proposal appropriately for each funder.

Other reasons for rejection are:
  • The deadline was missed
  • The methods are not clearly described
  • Duplicate programs are already available
  • The amount requested is beyond the funder's stated parameters
  • The proposal is poorly written and not well documented
  • The funding organization does not have enough funds at this time
