Five Preschools Host Meetings for Parents

Ruhiyyih's Preschool Imagine 140 villagers of all ages gathered under the stars, children sharing their songs and dances, a Kava welcoming ceremony, speeches on positive discipline being translated into Samoan, a performance of the traditional Samoan fire dance, mounds of food, lots of laughter and you will have a small glimpse of the magic that happened when "Responsibilities of Healthy Families" traveled to five preschools on Upolu and Savaii islands in Samoa.

A special feature of this tour were several performances by Youth of Light Dance Workshop, a group of young adults who perform stylized dances with social messages. The group traveled for several days in the back of pick up trucks to villages throughout the island of Savaii.

Some Youth of Light members Sasina Virtues WorkshopFour of the preschools were in rural areas where no other child development services are available. They are staffed by volunteers and are supported by small grants from the Ministry of Education and the UN. They all started a few years ago with a handful of students and have grown to enrollments of 30-50 students. School is conducted in English and Samoan, so the students have a big advantage when they later attend government schools. All five preschools incorporate moral education into their programs, believing that good character is the foundation of success in life. The meetings with parents helped to extend this philosophy into the student's homes.
