Your Statement of Needs
The problem or needs statement in a grant proposal answers the question "Why are you proposing this project?" The need refers to a condition of your customers (or students) that you are trying to address, such as teen pregnancy, academic achievement, workforce development, child abuse or technological competence. To write an effective needs statment take the following steps:
- Write an opening statement that describes the general problem you wish to address.
- Indicate your particular focus and why you chose it. Did you have input from students, parents or potential participants? Was there a particular incident that brought the need to your attention?
- Provide objective evidence of the need using statistics, census data, surveys, interviews with client populations, newspaper articles, citations from professional literature, predictions by credible authorities or focus group comments. Choose facts and statistics that are as specific as possible to the population and geographic area you intend to serve.
- Identify the sources of your information.
- Demonstrate that the problem is of a reasonable scope for you to address within the time frame and budget alloted by the grant.
