"I was drawn into the power of the communal chanting. It was an enlivening and refreshing experience - wholesome food for the soul." - Mark Lutness, Arizona
Collective devotional singing is “spiritual food for heart and soul”--an ancient doorway that can take you on a mystical journey to the Divine. Chant circles are a place to experience the joy, healing, comfort and inspiration that permeates the atmosphere when we whole-heartedly raise our voices together in love, unity, prayer and praise.
Nancy Watters teaches a collection of spirit-kindling, cross-cultural chants, mantras and soul-soothing sounds in a relaxed, accepting atmosphere where all voices are welcome. She has a talent for drawing out even the shyest “non singers”. Her music spans the globe and draws from a wide range of styles—lively, serene, meditative and ecstatic. Songs are taught orally, in the traditional manner of most cultures.
The basic repertoire includes:
Indigenous chants from many nations
Gospel songs and Spirituals
Jewish nigguns, “Kabalistic Kirtan” and chants
Taize Christian chants
Hindu Bhajans, chants and mantras
Sikh devotional songs and chants
Melodic Islamic and Sufi chants
Buddhist chants
Bahá’í songs, prayers and blessings
Chant circles also include toning, humming, “yoga laughter”, circle dance and vocal improvisation from time to time.
No prior experience is necessary. Come participate in a way that is comfortable for you—listen serenely, clap, tap, hum, dance or chant your heart out.
